Comfort women? No, they are prostitutes
I guess you already know what "comfort women" means; sexually abused women by Japanese military according to activists from Korea. Of course this is an alleged issue. Let me discuss the truth hidden behind this condemning from a perspective of a typical Japanese who once regret it already in 1980s and changed one's mind these years after a lot of personal investigation on the so-called "comfort women".
(1)Are these testimonies really reliable?
If testimonies have absolute reliability, I have another testimony from a Japanese side. When a Japanese lady was washing vegitables in the river, two Korean comfort women passed by her and laughed, "why can you do such a dirty work while you are beautiful? Why don't you look at us dressed with these beautiful outfits and change your mind? You are going to lead a happy life like us!"
(2) What about Korean?
Why don't Korean regret their own history of world-class prostitute industry? Not only US soldiers but Korean residents took advantage of comfort women along 동두천〔東豆川〕tongduch'ŏn in the Korean war. Depriving of women from their family and sell them as merchandise, that's their history.
(3)Comfort women pimps were mostly Korean
The problem of so-called "comfort women" (Ianpu) was severely discussed in Japan since 1980s. As a representive of Japanese government, Kono made a statement and apologized in 1993 for their physicological loss as comfort women. He was pursuaded by a number of protesters at that time, and said "they had to work as comfort women at that time and Japanese soldiers used that system." Since this statement was announced, a lot of research has been implemented. As the truth have been unraveled, however, people's interest has been lost due to small involvement by Japanese military. It turned out that Korean comfort women were torn apart from their family by Korean traders (for details go to (2)). It's their own karma. Kono lately admitted that he made a decision with only testimonies he heard at an interview with former comfort women. No evidence in literature was found after then although it turns out critical discripancies were found in their tenstimonies. The term "involvement of military" is very tricky. Japanese military at that time prepared facilities to house comfort women and have doctors see them to prevent them from VD (see (2) for details). If somebody forcefully dragged their hands into the salons, it's Korean public dealers. Of course there were a lot of applications to become comfort women on account of extraordinary sallery. They ought to have been paid that much since they provided their body far away from their home town.
Anyway, foreign newspapers typically know few about the lowdown of the disputed issue. Onishi Norimitsu at New York Times should investigate it more and present solid evidences if accusing Japan's response. Otherwise people are now gossiping about you, suspecting you may be zainichi(Korean).

Professor Yi (李栄薫) at Seoul National University, apologized to the comfort women for sating "they were prostitutes" after avalanche of criticisms. Totalitarianization doesn't allow academia to make a free speech. Note that there are lots more scholars who were criticized because of their interpretations in favor of Japanese rule before 1945.
(5)What about their current disaster in North Korea?
The culture of "comfort women" can be seen in North Korea, too. They are collected from all over the country and used as sex slaves to satisfy insatiable sexual appetite of Kim Jong Il. Working as sex slaves and serve to him is taught as honorable. Condemning Japanese is thus effective to avert other's attention onto their own countries and overshadowing their own current discrepancy.

Yoshimi made a statement in a TV program that aired in 1997, and said there was no organized kidnapping executed by Japanese military. It's in agreement with the interpretation of Japanese government. I don't see any problem about that.
If you want to make a conclusion about anything, evidences are needed with it.
You claim that there are many Korean women sex workers. I believe there are many pure-blood Japanese women who work as prostitues too, both in Japan and abroad. However, what I find "hilarious", not to say sick, is that many of you Japanese MEN claim to be "better", cleaner or whatever more positive than Koreans or other Asians, NEVERTHELESS, it still the JAPANESE MEN who PAY for the sex with "sluts" (Korean and other) from abroad, don't they? Sure. There's a demand all the time throughout the history. Sadly men cannot resist buying women, and women cannot resist selling themselves for money.
It's a universal thing. There's no noble Japanese men nor low Korean women. The news I cited about Korean prostitutes was from Australia. To sum up, there's need in Australian men who want to buy Korean women. So is UK. So is Japan.

Japan liberated Asian countries India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, from the evil oppressions of Britain, Holland, France, and US. In these countries, the Imperial Japanese Forces are regarded as god-send forces, and they show their eternal gratitude to Japan in their national anthems. On the Independence Day of Indonesia, Indonesian soldiers dressed in the Imperial Japanese Army uniform raise the Japanese flag while Japanese military songs are played.
After WW2 was over, 2000 Japanese soldiers remained in Indonesia, trained Indonesian soldiers, and fought for independence against the invasion of Holland. The battle lasted for 4 years, and 1000 Japanese soldiers perished in the battle.
In Vietnam, 1600 Japanese soldiers remained there, opened a military academy for Vietnamese, trained Vietnamese soldiers, and fought for independence against the invasion of France and subsequently US. All the top Vietnamese officers during Vietnam War were graduates of this academy.
WW2 in Asia, or the Great East Asiatic War, was the greatest human revolution, or holly war in history. This movement spread to African colonies as well, leading to the independence of these countries.
Japan made by far the greatest contribution for the racial equality in the world since it advocated the cause at Paris Peace Conference in 1919. Japan’s proposal was crushed by Britain and US, but was later included in the UN Charter.

YOu say that Japanese have 2 faces? Koreans have maybe 3 or 5 faces. Which face they use depends upon how rich you are or what you can give to them. Koreans never do anything out of selfless generosity. They only are nice to you when you can give them the only one thing that they worship in life: MONEY.

After ww2 a woman 文玉珠 Mun Okujyu sued Japanese govt. to give her 26154 yen (30 million yen at present price) in her postal passbook saved as a prostitute for 2 years. By the passbook she had sent 5000 yen one by one to her house when she had worked. At that time by 1000 yen, she could built a house in Korea. She declared bid for the second comfort woman.
Also there left several newspaper ads posted by Chosun brokers to recruit women by high salary (150 thousand yen a month, present time) and an advance loan of 30 million yen.
It was higher than the salaries of officers.

Who bid as the first comfort woman?
She is 金学順 Kim Hakusun who is a mother-in-law of a leftish-wing Asahi newspaper writer, Uemura who started "comfort women campaign".
At first she affirmed she was sold by her mom to Korean prostitute broker by 40 yen (3 times as much as JP solider salary).
Actually, this campaign was based on a book by leftish Seii Yoshida in which he wrote he had kidnapped many Korean women in Jeju.
Japanese media and Korea started to deal largely with this issue.
But he has never been to Jeju in ww2 and confessed later it was a fiction (in Shukan asahi,etc) saying 'Books have to be interesting to be sold.
Researchers were sent to Jeju but the islanders denied the kidnapping strongly and Jeju newspaper published it. Seoul university Prof. An also researched the parole evidences of comfort women (Japanese leftish ex-Korean politician Fukushima had collected) in detail for 2 years and concluded they are very unreliable. They often changes. Some said they went to Pusan, Niiigata where armies were not. Some women were not born then. One women's evidence has changed 14 times,etc.
But ignoring the researched results, South Korea govt. started to use it as an anti-Japan political card and it continued until now.
*No proofs of forcing by Japanese army and many proofs of kidnapping by Koreans
South Korea has insisted 200,000 girls were raped and kidnapped by Japanese army. But there are no objective proofs and witnesses of forcing by Japanese army from South Korea and Japan besides women's parole evidences. And many women have not said they were kidnapped by Japanese soldiers clearly.
South Korea says 200000 is based on the number of 'Jyoshi teishintai' according to an Asahi newspaper article. But wait! 'Jyoshi teishintai' was a voluntary organization of 14-25 Japanese women who wanted to help Japan and worked in Japanese factories, and it was not applied to Koreans.
Meanwhile there are many newspaper articles police was cracking down on bad Korean brokers and kidnappers. Then 80% of policemen were Koreans.
One example: August 31,1939, an article by Toua nippou (Korean newspaper) says police arrested a group of Koreans who kidnapped 100 women and made them work at prostitute brothels.
There are also newspaper articles Japanese girls were kidnapped and protected.
Mr. Oyama, historical researcher examined all the Asahi newspaper articles on kidnapping, all criminals were Koreans. lol
*Physical impossibility of forcing by Japanese army
Since Russo-Japanese War (1904-5) , only 1 or 2 small units of Japanese army had stayed near the border of Russia in Chosun peninsula. Chosun public safety was ensured by 2-3 thousands of policemen (at most 7 thousands).80% policemen were Koreans including no.2 Korean general police officer. Then there were ca.2400 political districts (village, town, city) and 1 or 2 policemen had to control crimes in 1 district.
*After ww2 Japanese army 'first' entered in the capital Seoul to protect Japanese who were going to return Japan.
*Institutional impossibility of forcing by Japanese army
In annexation period 80 % important posts were occupied by Koreans.
80% of governor generals, politicians and officers were Koreans.
Governor-General of Korea had parliaments and could decide policies.
Japanese were only 2% of the entire population.
Governor-General of Korea often went against Japanese government.
From the last 19 century, many Koreans has smuggled into Japan until now. Japanese government often forbid it, but Governor-General of Korea opposed it and demonstrations were staged.
There were 240 thousands volunteered Korean soldiers, including many superior class officers. If there were forcing by Japanese, they would not allowed Japanese. There were many claims to Japanese then.
For example, Koushu-jiken (affair). After one Japanese high school student mocked a high school girl, a large protest movement rose. There left an article many high school students neglected English class saying their Japanese English teacher's pronunciation is bad and they hope Korean teacher.
Koreans are very emotional. Didn't they oppose when their girls were taken to force to brothels? It's not a possibility
After ww2 Koreans' riots were terrible in Japan. There are many articles Japnese were killed and raped, good lands and buildings were robbed.
It was so terrible that Prime minister Yoshida asked MACARTHUR to make only Koreans return to Korea because many of them are communists and criminals and 7000 are usually in prisons and half of them are smugglers. The petition and parliament records are left. They even tried to kill a prime minister on a train. Koreans' riots were stopped by US army in Osaka.
*Compensation has finished to unreliable comfort women and South Korea
By Asian women fund established in Japan, 2 million of compensate is paid to each comfort woman with an apologize letter by leftish ex-president Murayama. But Korean NPO ordered them not to receive it. So it looks many comfort women did not receive them.
In 1959, South Korea signed in Japan‐Republic of Korea Basic Relations Treaty. By that all compensation was over by compensation money of 2 trillion yen (at present price) including individual compensation. South Korea government spent it to its development and concealed the Treaty itself until 2005 to its people.
Japan offerd tremendous ODA utill 1991 and has lent 70 trillion yen. In IMF crisis Japan aided South Korea 10 trillion yen via IMF. But South Korea government did not let the people know them. It hasn't return construction cost of stadium of Japan-Korea world soccer.
South Korea concealed many Japanese aids to its people for anti-Japan nationalism like cult.
For South Korea comfort women is a good political card to gain profit.
*US couldn't find any evidences and for what must Japan apology?
Until 1983 comfort women were just prostitutes who worked at brothels accompanying to Japanese army. In any time brothels were related to army.
In 1997 Clinton tried to find evidences of Japanese army forcing, but he couldn't find it. The result accords completely with a survey by US army done in Burma in 1944.

Although the contents of crime is vague, the word "sex slave" has wings.
It looks for me they don't want to change post-war regime based on the myth that 'Japanese army was absolute veil'. Or is it South Korea lobbying?
As the definition of crime is vague and is different in South Korea and US, Japan can't apology and accept the word "sex slaves" because objective facts worth of the word have not been found.
* Double standard of South Korea
South Korea had offered comfort women to U.S. army since Chosen war until at least 1980. Then, 30% of entire population were involved with prostitute industry.

From 1951-1954, Korean army was adopting a system named "Special comfort unit". It is recorded in a public document "Backward war history" by Korean army(1956).
In Vietnam war, Korean soldiers left ca.25,000 hybrid children there (Raitaihan).But there are no records Japanese army left hybrid children in Chosen peninsula. Japanese army is famous for not having left hybrid children in several wars.
In Kitakyushu, Japan, there was a hospital named Hatsukaichi Hoyousho where ca.500 abortions were operated to pregnant Japanese women raped by Koreans and Russians after ww2. It was made by that many pregnant women committed suicides from ships returning to Japan. Paper notifying the hospital was delivered on the ship delicately. There left a documentary record about it.
